I hope not.

Even if I just pretty much lurk around Oppo now, this is quite the bummer.

I thought I saw some posts where someone convinced a writer to look into saving us, and then Patrick George redacted his eulogy; did nothing come of this? we’re really getting shut down?

And what’s the consensus; are w’all (contraction I just invented based on the southern “y’all”) going to “The Hyphen” or DriveTribe? I should probably check them out soon...

So long as we’re all (sorry..., wr’all) sharing our first posts on here. It seems I posted about the P1, still my favorite car way back in March 2013.

We’ve shared some great experiments over the years. I like to think that I helped some people get writing gigs in the car industry, but they probably would have gotten them without me anyways.

I’m happy I started Formula Freak, but man did it turn into a “job” (see: unpaid internship where you do all your boss’s work) quick, yuck. But I am thinking about starting up the podcast again cause that was fun, so we’ll see.

I wish The Opposite Locker would have performed better, but ah well.

Tom helped me buy my first car, a Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Coupe R-Spec that I loved dearly and sold after 120,000 miles to a coworker.

Some of us had a good time playing GT4 a few years ago. My memory is super foggy, but whoever you are that was a riot.

Not the end...just the end of this location.  Laverne and Shirley continued on when they moved from Milwaukee to LA, and we will, too...

Hopefully drive tribe. The hyphen is cool, but will kill oppo

No way to gain new members, no garuntee of uptime, no legal backing or protection. Essentially the site will slowly lose members over time as it is not attached to a larger site where people can find us. T he causal people will leave, and t he site will get more and more insular and form an Oppo hive mind singularity. It may even develop its own language.

What if something happens to the site owner? What if they get sued? What if there's a major bug? I don't think Oppo can survive independently.

The site doesnt even work yet. DriveTribe is there, it’s robust, the professional web developer is working with us to accommodate the things we miss, and there’s even a path for the best Oppo writers to make some money I think directly without getting hired away. There's also other users on DT that can pulled join Oppo.

You are 100% right, it will be an uphill struggle. DriveT ribe is part of the answer but not the whole thing, it’s a great connector but feels far too like Instagram to develop a sense of real community. M embership here attached to Jalop has shrunk drastically in the last couple years anyway.

I am the site owner but working with a group of others to build it. Here are our long term thoughts on how to keep Oppo alive. Legal concerns are far overblown, for copyright this is why DCMA takedown and Section 230 exist.  It won’t be pain free, but it feels like its worth fighting for.

I dunno, oppo can/will grow organically.  I don't think shackling ourselves to a dying site is a good thing

It does work. There is also far more activity there than on DT.

I think we’re all kind of wandering around and waiting for a final call on where to land. Lots went to the hyphen page, which is a work in progress but getting good traffic. oppositelock.com has a full list of landing spots, and yeah.

Any plans to archive Formula Freak? So much great stuff on there.

I think I’m most worried about the lack of legal protections on the hyphen, but last time I used DriveTribe it didn’t seem all the featured; o nly let me post a picture and some small text.

I probably should backup Formula Freak ? I attempted to archive the posts using Kinja, but it just spat out some error at me .

Have you used Medium? Is that an actual publication or can anyone just use/post- to it? That might be better for a longer in-depth post versus the typical community ventures on Oppo.

I haven’t used Medium, but it looks pretty simple and clean.

There’s a post editor (Creator Studio or something?) buried back in DriveTribe and I think someone on Oppo even posted a how-to, but it is pretty complicated.

There’s a few folks offering to archive posts on here, too, but if you’re looking to transfer over posts, I don’t know what the best format would be.
